Ain't It Cool News interviews Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust) created. According to Walker, the Japanese cut is longer with "about seven or eight additional scenes," but without an opening exposition text sequence. Walker also says Kawajiri "didn't like" the American cut, but the director's cut will be available later this year.
