Both general readers and experts participate in the nomination of manga that were published from January to December of the previous year. The newspaper awards a 2-million-yen ($20,000) Manga Grand Prize and 1 million yen (US$10,000) each for a New Artist Prize, a Short Work Prize, and usually a Special Prize every year.
