The Rose of Versailles Manga Returns After 40 Years in New 1-Shot

16-page story focusing on Andre to mark 50th anniversary of Margaret magazine

Margaret magazine on Saturday. The one-shot will focus on Andre as a boy before he met Oscar.

The new one-shot is being published in a special "Anniversary Book" extra that is being bundled with Saturday's issue of Margaret to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the magazine. Shueisha launched Margaret in 1963 as a weekly publication, and the magazine changed to being published twice a month in 1988.

Ikeda wrote the original manga in Shueisha's Weekly Margaret magazine from 1972-1973. The story is set in the intrigue-filled court of Queen Marie Antoinette before and during the upheavals of the French Revolution. Lady Oscar is a young woman raised as a man to serve in the palace guards.

The manga inspired a 40-episode anime in 1979-1980 that Takarazuka Revue since 1974, and even a live-action 1978 French/Japanese film.
