Former Famitsu Editor In Chief Estimates Dragon Quest XI Will Sell 5 Million Copies in Japan

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Hirokazu Hamamura expects game to outsell Pokémon Sun/Moon, Final Fantasy XV combined

game will sell more than 5 million copies in Japan.

Hamamura stated that the game will sell more than Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon (combined sales of about 4 million in Japan) and Final Fantasy XV (sales of about 1 million in Japan) combined. He explained that he estimated that number for a few reasons. First, the game is expected to ship on the PlayStation 4. Secondly, smartphone games such as Hoshi no Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light have brought in new fans to the Dragon Quest franchise who are now anticipating the new main game in the series.

Hamamura also said the game might sell even more than he expects, stating, "the destructive force of Dragon Quest is in a completely different league. There are also people who will likely buy both the PS4 and 3DS versions [of the game]." Dragon Quest XI will ship on the PS4 and Nintendo 3DS in Japan on July 29. A Nintendo Switch version is planned, although it doesn't have a release date yet.

Final Fantasy XV's combined sales and shipments worldwide exceed 6 million copies.

Nintendo sold 14.69 million copies worldwide as of December 31, with 3.81 million units sold in Japan.
