The adventure simulation game takes place in a world where people have animal ears and tails, and rival generals battle for supremacy. Sting developed a PlayStation 2 port, titled Utawarerumono: Chiriyukumono e no Komoriuta, which AQUAPLUS released in 2006. A PlayStation Portable port debuted in 2009.
The Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen (Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception) game shipped for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita in Japan in September 2015, and it debuted in Japan for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita in September 2016. The game shipped for PS4 and PS Vita in the West last September.
The original game inspired a 2006 television anime series, a 2007 manga, and a 2009 original video anime series. released the series on home video.
