Rating:

As you might recall if you read my Initial D you have at home.” And the first episode of this second season certainly hasn't changed my mind about that.

I think it was a very poor decision to end season 1 mid-race. It felt less like a cliffhanger and more like a way to kill any momentum they had built up. As though to prove that, when this first episode opens up and Kanata's still mid-race (or rather, we see him starting, but then it quickly goes back to where season 1 left off), one kind of has to remind themselves what was going on and why it was supposed to be thrilling. This is coming from someone who watched season 1 fairly recently—I imagine it would be a much more pronounced feeling for someone who hasn't watched the first season since it aired this time last year.

In any case, due to the aforementioned loss of momentum, Kanata's securing himself a decent place in the race doesn't feel like it has as much gravity as it should. The race wraps up not too long into the episode, and it makes one wonder why this wasn't just the end of season 1—so season 2 could pick up right after. Maybe this is just a me thing, but I think that'd be a much more natural way to close off season 1 if it was going to end this quickly in the first episode of season 2.

While I think the race might be fun to watch, so far, I'm just not feeling it with this series, if that makes sense. I've seen worse premieres this season (cough KamiErabi season 2 cough) but I've seen way better, too. This whole series has been pretty underwhelming so far—and sure, maybe it's at least in part because I'm not a gearhead. But I can still think of plenty of other anime—even from this very season—that revolve around sports and hobbies that I'm also not usually into, that I still think were great all the same. In summary, MF Ghost will drive an uphill race for my attention this season.
