Even the Anime Cast Were in the Dark About the Mysteries of Fate/Extra Last Encore

Kana Ueda discuss the subtle acting changes from the original game to anime

At an advance screening of the first two episodes of PlayStation Portable game released in 2010.

The voice actors mentioned that the plot of Fate/Extra Last Encore contains quite a few differences and extra elements from the original game, and that there are “a lot of mysteries.” These mysteries were not explained to the voice actors even as they were participating in the recording sessions, so they were very curious to find out what happens next at each session. Ueda explicitly mentioned that Fate/Extra is “a different kind of Fate story.”

The voice actors also pointed out subtle differences in how they approached their acting this time. Abe noted that it felt very different voicing Hakuno in the anime compared to the drama CDs. Tange pointed out that Hakuno speaks in a more masculine way in the anime. Abe said that he can't explain why that is, but noted that Hakuno is full of mystery.

Tange also mentioned differences in how she perceived Saber in the anime. She said that Saber felt like a more “boyish” character when she was mostly portrayed through still images in the game. However, Saber's expressions and character animation in the anime are very lively, which made Tange feel that she should make her voice sound “cute.”

Netflix Japan from January 31.
